Zaporizhzhia

The city of Zaporizhzhia lies along the banks of the Dnipro River in the southern region of Ukraine. Renowned for its industrial potential, including powerful metallurgy and machine-building clusters, it also boasts a rich historical heritage and diverse culture.

Local Economy

Zaporizhzhia has long been known for its metallurgical, chemical, engineering, and energy sectors. Even amid the challenges of ongoing war, many local enterprises continue to operate, albeit not at full capacity.

Additionally, more than 1,600 small businesses have relocated to Zaporizhzhia from temporarily occupied territories. In 2024, 1,535 new small businesses were established—an increase of 4.2% compared to 2023.

The city is a major scientific center, home to the region’s top universities: Zaporizhzhia National University and its Engineering Institute, Zaporizhzhia State Medical and Pharmaceutical University, and Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic. These institutions cultivate a highly qualified workforce not only for the city but for other regions of Ukraine.

During the War

Despite immense challenges, Zaporizhzhia continues to demonstrate remarkable resilience and a strong commitment to recovery. It has become a major hub for humanitarian and volunteer activities, with numerous organizations working tirelessly to support both civilians and the military. Internally displaced persons now comprise 20% of the local population.

The city’s proximity to the front line—just about 30 km away—has led to innovative solutions to sustain daily life and continue development. Zaporizhzhia leads the country in constructing safe underground schools, ensuring children can continue their education. Several air raid shelters across the city have been transformed into well-equipped public spaces known as “Invincible Hubs,” providing venues for community events and gatherings.

Culture and Social Life

The people of Zaporizhzhia remain deeply connected to their cultural heritage. The regional philharmonic, music and drama theater, and the municipal “Actor’s House,” along with museums dedicated to history, architecture, and technology, all contribute to the city’s vibrant cultural life. The legendary Khortytsia Island is an essential part of the city’s identity and a famous tourist destination.

Zaporizhzhia continues to celebrate art and culture, hosting open-air exhibitions, theater festivals, and book forums that attract not only locals but also visitors from other regions. In 2024, the city took a significant step in youth empowerment by establishing its first municipal Youth Center, staffed by dedicated young citizens committed to shaping the city’s future.

International Cooperation

Zaporizhzhia has a long-standing tradition of sister city partnerships, dating back to 1953. In 2022, our sister cities—Magdeburg and Oberhausen (Germany), Linz (Austria), Lahti (Finland), and Birmingham (UK)—were among the first to extend their support.

Since then, our collaboration has expanded beyond humanitarian aid to include joint projects that strengthen civil infrastructure, promote cultural exchange, and share best practices in healthcare and education. The City Development Institute of Zaporizhzhia, a municipal institution established by the City Council, plays a key role in facilitating cooperation with international partners.
