Improving patient care at city hospital in partnership with Oberhausen

A modern computed tomography (CT) scanner received by Zaporizhzhia by from twin city, Oberhausen, has been installed at City Hospital No. 4.

The hospital carried out extensive preparations for the installation. In August, the radiology department was renovated to meet all technical requirements for the new equipment, with additional renovation work completed earlier this year. Medical staff also underwent specialised training and internships at a diagnostic centre.

The process of acquiring the CT scanner took four months and included preparation of the application and supporting documentation, coordination of technical specifications, and logistics arrangements. The project was coordinated by the City Development Institute of Zaporizhzhia in close cooperation with partners in Oberhausen.

The new device is currently the only CT scanner in the city with a resolution of 128 slices. According to doctors, a higher number of slices ensures greater image detail, which is particularly important for diagnosing bone injuries, vascular conditions, brain disorders, and oncological diseases. The equipment will enable faster and more accurate detection of internal pathologies, significantly reducing the time needed to begin treatment.

The scanner’s planned capacity is 7–8 patients per day. Examinations will be provided free of charge under the Medical Guarantees Programme of the National Health Service of Ukraine, by referral and appointment. By prior arrangement, patients from other medical facilities may also undergo examinations.

City Hospital No. 4 treats more than 11,000 inpatients annually, while approximately 50,000 patients receive outpatient care. The hospital provides both planned and emergency surgical services, making access to advanced diagnostic equipment critically important.

The project was implemented with the support of the Engagement Global and funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. But above all, it reflects the strong partnership between Zaporizhzhia and Oberhausen, as well as the solidarity and support of German colleagues and partners.

This is already the second joint healthcare project implemented with Oberhausen. In the summer of 2025, the hospital also received rehabilitation equipment for outpatient rehabilitation and physiotherapy under the Nakopa Programme.
