Community autonomy and resilience: Zaporizhzhia shares its experience at the national forum

Mariia Kuznietsova, Deputy Director for International Cooperation Development at the City Development Institute of Zaporizhzhia, participated in the Third Forum of Southern Ukraine, “Government & Communities: Joint Path from Humanitarian Response to Recovery & Development,” organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ukraine.

During the panel discussion “Community Autonomy as the Basis for Sustainability in the Frontline Zone,” Mariia presented Zaporizhzhia’s experience, highlighting key factors of urban resilience, the importance of cross-sector partnerships, community engagement in recovery processes, and the role of local initiatives amid ongoing security challenges.

UNDP remains a reliable partner for Zaporizhzhia. This cooperation is already delivering tangible results, including:

  • provision of equipment and supplies for emergency and rescue services;
  • creation of safe spaces for residents;
  • training and educational events for civil society and local authorities.

Together with international partners, Zaporizhzhia continues to strengthen its resilience, support community development, and create the conditions necessary for the region’s recovery.

The forum was organized by UNDP in Ukraine with financial support from the Government of Denmark. The opinions, recommendations, and conclusions expressed by forum participants are solely their own and do not reflect the official positions of UNDP, the United Nations, or the Government of Denmark.
